Top Down Summer Tunic or Beach Cover Up




Material Used:
Yarn: One and a half (1 ½) skeins Alize Cotton Gold (3.53 oz - 361 yds each skein)
Crochet Hook: 4mm














Stitches + Abbreviations Used:
sk – skip
sp – space
st – stich
sl st – slip stitch
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
tr – triple crochet
shell – [2dc-ch2-2dc]

  1. This project is worked in the round, in one side, we will NEVER turn the work.
  2. The first Double Crochet of the row is always the 3rd ch counting from the bottom to the top.


Size: 10-12yrs old

Ch. 100

Row 1: Work a sl st in the 1st ch to form a big circle. Ch 1, and work 1 sc all around. Sl st in the 1st of the row. (100 st)
Row 2: Ch 4, sk 1 st, dc in the 2nd one. [ch 1, sk 1 st, dc in the 2nd one] x 48. Ch 1 and sl st in 1st dc of row.
(50 squares)
Row 3: Sl st in ch 1 sp. Ch 4 and dc in next ch 1sp. [ch 1, dc in next ch 1 sp] x 48. Ch 1 and sl st in 1st dc of row. (50 squares)
Row 4: Sl st in ch 1 sp. Ch 5 and dc in next ch 1 sp. [ch 2, dc in next ch 1 sp] x 48. Ch 2 and sl st in 1st dc of row. (50 squares)
Rows 5+6: Sl st in ch 2 sp. Ch 5 and dc in next ch 2-sp. [ch 2, dc in next ch 2-sp] x 48. Ch 2 and sl st in 1st dc of row. (50 squares)
Row 7: Sl st in ch 2 sp. Ch 5 and dc in same ch sp, ch 1. [dc-ch2-dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 1] x 49. Sl st in 1st dc of row. (50 sets)
Row 8: Sl st in ch 2 sp. Ch3 and dc in same ch sp, ch 2 and 2 more dc in same ch sp (this forms a shell). [2dc-ch2-2dc in next ch 2 sp] x 49. Sl st in 1st dc of row. (50 shells)
Rows 9-12: Work 2 more sl st, one in the 2nd dc and in the ch 2 sp. Ch3 and dc in same ch sp, ch 2 and 2 more dc in same ch sp, ch 1. [2dc-ch2-2dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 1] x 49. Sl st in 1st dc of row. (50 shells)
Rows 13+14: Work 2 more sl st, one in the 2nd dc and in the ch 2 sp. Ch3 and dc in same ch sp, ch 2 and 2 more dc in same ch sp, ch 2. [2dc-ch2-2dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2] x 49. Sl st in 1st dc of row. (50 shells)
Row 15: We’re going to join to close the sleeves and from here on we’re going to continue working the body.  Work 2 more sl st, one in the 2nd dc and in the ch 2 sp. Ch3 and dc in same ch sp, ch 2 and 2 more dc in same ch sp, ch 2. [2dc-ch2-2dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2] x 11. Skip 13 sets of shells (these 13 sets will be my 1st sleeve) and starting from the 14th shell work [2dc-ch2-2dc, ch 2], then [2dc-ch2-2dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2] x 11. Skip 13 sets of shells (these 13 sets will be my 2nd sleeve) and sl st in the 1st of the row.
So at this point I have 12 sets of shells for the front and back of my tunic, and separated 13 sets of shells for each sleeve. (24 shells)
Rows 16-26: Work 2 more sl st, one in the 2nd dc and in the ch 2 sp. Ch3 and dc in same ch sp, ch 2 and 2 more dc in same ch sp, ch 3. [2dc-ch2-2dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 3] x 23. Sl st in 1st dc of row. (24 shells)
Rows 27-37: Work 2 more sl st, one in the 2nd dc and in the ch 2 sp. Ch3 and dc in same ch sp, ch 2 and 2 more dc in same ch sp, ch 4. [2dc-ch2-2dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 4] x 23. Sl st in 1st dc of row. (24 shells)
Row 38 (last row): Work 2 more sl st, one in the 2nd dc and in the ch 2 sp. Ch 4 and work 6 tr in same ch sp. Ch 4, sc in next shell, ch 4 [7 tr in next shell, ch 4 sc in next shell, ch 4] x 11. Sl st in last st of row, which is the 4th ch counting from bottom to top.

If you also like to follow graphs, this is the one I used, with the only difference is that I started row 1 with single crochet rather than double crochet that the graph shows.. it sits better on the collar bone this way.
